This day is all about the Pumpkin – and what’s funny, we actually filmed this on National Pumpkin Day! Who knew right. We’re going to process our Gete …
Do you have to buy special pumpkins for pie or can you use the everyday pumpkin? I got 2 beauties from Aldi and they have been on my porch.
Sometimes! ๐คฃ๐คฃ๐คฃ You guys are precious.
Thanks for the tips on canning pumpkins. We ended up with around 50 pumpkins this year ๐. I have discovered a great way to grow them. I make a 5 ft circle of chickenwire in the fall . I put landscape fabric on the inside and cardboard and start a hugel mound in it. Layers of corn stacks leaves and grass , then chickens bedding. I will add weeds, leaves , old tomato plants, sticks, wood chips or shredded paper. I keep layering it until it comes to the top. It sits all winter. It will sink to around 1/2 of what you started with. I save leaves and grass in plastic bags over the winter to add to my circles, I will add more chicken bedding, layer finished compost on the top then potting mix if needed.
I use the top of this planter for strawberries and I plant the pumpkins plants or seeds at the base- the giant compost fertilizes the plants all season. You need about 20-30 ft around the hugel circles. I had 2 pumpkin plants at the base on opposite sides . Left me room to pick strawberries. I do this in my chicken yard. I had 3 circles and 6 plants that really produced. Last year we had 60 pumpkins. I gave a lot away. We and the chickens eat them all wInter. Happy growing everyone.
Iโll definitely head over to RJs Farm to subscribe! I must have missed that videoโฆIโll go back and check it out.
Your pumpkin soup looked delicious. Excited to learn from you how the Gete-Okosomin tasted. Native Americans mustโve set great store on the taste given their centuries of hand pollination.
Looks like RJ has reached over 1000 followers now! A super young man.
No one knows more than me, that pork needs to be cooked all the way thru. It's way different than beef steak safety wise. Both uncooked or raw pork and undercooked pork are unsafe to eat. Meat sometimes has bacteria and parasites that can make you sick. Thorough cooking kills any germs that might be present. I only say this to help. I love your channel by the way.
Rachel, you and Todd are great mentors. Russell is such a smart and amazing kid, I watched all his videos. U Tube camaraderie is giving me hope in America.
Ground turkey cranberry and squash casserole. With kale or spinach. Is amazing with pumpkin.. and very. Savory and filling,
Canned pumpkin is so good. I use it in pies and bread and just plain ole butter salt and pepper.
Smart women ! Pumpkin should not be wasted ! It will be delicious ! I have been canning up squash and pumpkin like crazy! Such a versatile vegetable !
You need the log splitter for that pumpkin.
Pumpkin added to chili is wonderful!
I think some nann bread would be good with that soup ๐
I've seen you use that lid/can opener, I like it a lot. Do you know where you got it. It looks like it doesn't make any dents in the lid. The one I have makes a small dent in the lid when I remove it. Thanks, love your channel, you guys work well together in the Kitchen! Nancy from nebraska
From the angel of looking at you guys, when you took a pic of your soup, from my angel I could see a jack-o'-lantern ๐
I just adore you guys. Angels among us
I made pumpkin pie with carrots. Same spices canned carrots mashed eggs and evaporated milk.
I am soooo curious about that old squash!!! And Iโm subscriber 972 on RJโs channel. He is so close to getting a play button! ๐๐ป๐๐ป๐๐ป๐๐๐
I use a icecream scoop to get the seeds out. Easier for me than a spoon.
I feel Todd was hoping you were gonna say forget the big pumpkin lol
What do the white pumpkins taste like ?
lol Rachel you and that knife was giving me Aniexty ๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐๐
I was one that saw RJ on your channel. I went to his and subscribed. Such a small thing to do for so much sweet joy.
I still have some canned pumpkin from a few years ago I just might use in pumpkin soup! Iโm so excited for Russell! That boy brought a tear to my eye.
I'm glad to know I am not the only one that went on a cleaning frenzy!!๐๐๐๐
You guys are so special!!! Love how you help each other out and R J too!
I enjoy watching your video and I really agree with you that we have an opportunity to be up lifting on social media. There is so much that is bad on Facebook YouTube and other social media sites thanks for trying to balance it out with positive and encouraging videos.
That rare squash is so awesome hope next year you are able to get more to grow. Where did you get your seeds?
Sooo precious โค๏ธ๐
The blue pumpkin seeds are similarly very fat and chunky.
My family's favorite pumpkin meal is "Dinner in a Pumpkin". I have modified it to be similar to Shepherd Pie. Filling recipe is basically rice(cooked), mushrooms, mushroom soup, celery, onion, red bell peppers. Ground meat (we use venison) Soy sauce, garlic, brown sugar. Either stuff your pumpkin and bake, or I put in casserole dish and cover with mashed pumpkin and bake.
RJ is adorable ๐ great video guys, thanks for sharing ๐งก๐๐ผ
Russell is almost at 1000 subscribers. Can't wait to see what he's got in store for us next. ๐
Today was pumpkin canning at our house too.
He'll be at 1000 by Saturday โค
WOW what a pumpkin, you should be very very proud of yourself. That soup looked amazing but unfortunately in our current temps there is no way I could eat hot soup hahaha. RJ is a wonderful little boy & his parents should be so proud of themselves, I have subscribed & am enjoying watching him. Cheers Denise- Australia
RJ was so excited. Hey Rachel when you cook would you post the recipe. It always looks so yummy but I can never remember everything. I already saw your pic on instagram.
I've seen a hack using a flat canning lid to scrape out the seeds from the insides. Russell is a great kid.
You should sell some of those long squash/pumpkin seeds so I can buy some for my wife to try here in our garden.
An old canning lid scraps out the stringy goop really well.
You can roast and then freeze dry the pumpkin to save on jars and prep time. Powder the results and you can still use the results for soups mashed etc.
Todd please use the peeler!
